Raton's History

Raton, New Mexico has a rich history that dates back to its early days as a vital railroad and trade hub. Founded in the late 19th century, the town , also known as the Raton Pass, was named the highest point of the Santa Fe Railway, which connected the region to major markets and facilitated growth. Its name derived from the Spanish word for "mouse." Raton's strategic location on U.S. Route 66 further cemented its importance as a bustling stopover during the golden age of American road travel. Today, Raton’s historic charm and well-preserved architecture reflect its vibrant past, celebrating a legacy of exploration, commerce, and community.

1916

The Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field, which includes several volcanic structures near Raton, was designated as a significant geological area, attracting interest from geologists and tourists.

1930s

The Great Depression had a significant impact on Raton, as it did across the country. Economic hardships affected mining operations and the overall prosperity of the town.

1940s

During World War II, Raton experienced a degree of economic relief due to increased demand for coal and other resources.

1950s and 1960s

The decline of the coal industry led to economic challenges for Raton. The town began to diversify its economy and focus more on tourism and local businesses.
