Maxwells's History

Founded in the late 19th century, Maxwell was primarily a railroad stop along the Santa Fe Railroad, which facilitated the settlement of the region. Named after the Maxwell Land Grant, awarded to Lucien Bonaparte Maxwell, the town became a center for agriculture and ranching. Today, Maxwell is a peaceful destination for visitors seeking an outdoor getaway.

The Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge was established in Maxwell, enhancing the areas appeal for outdoor recreation and wildlife.

Late 19th - Early 20th Century

Maxwell became a significant center for cattle ranching wit the fertile plains and access to water resources supporting the industry.

Today

Maxwell remains a small village, maintaining rural charm and historical significance.
